City government mobilizes to swat down signs critical of mayor

What happens in Syracuse when you paste up a sign about a new world order? Nothing. It stays there. What happens when you paste up a sign questioning the mayor's performance? It comes down. Immediately. Even if it takes 10 city workers, the Downtown Committee, scrapers, glue remover and paint.

That's what happened Wednesday. Crews from the city's Department of Public Works fanned out across downtown to try to remove more than 200 signs that popped up like a bright orange rash on utility poles.

They didn't name Syracuse Mayor Matt Driscoll, but they said: You got your raise, mayor, now do your job. Mayor Doolittle. Read More....

FBI, NYPD Raid Queens Apartment In Terrorism Investigation

Residents in Queens were witness to an FBI raid Monday morning, as agents flooded the area looking for explosives. Neighbors stood by as a large group of FBI agents and NYPD detectives converged on an apartment building as point of a joint terrorist task force.

The NYPD says one of the residences is located on 147th Street between Parsons and 41st Avenue in Flushing, Queens. Read More....

Jody Powell, 65, a key public relations specialist for Jimmy Carter who helped orchestrate the obscure Georgia governor's rise to the White House in 1976 and then served as his press secretary, died Sept. 14 at a hospital near his home in Cambridge, on Maryland's Eastern Shore.

His death, from an apparent heart attack, was confirmed by Jack Nelson, a former Washington bureau chief for the Los Angeles Times and a friend of Mr. Powell's. Read More....

A new audio tape from Osama bin Laden warning the American people over their government's close ties to Israel has been released by al- Qaeda's media branch, according to a US-based terror monitoring group.

Adviser: High unemployment for years

The president’s chief economic adviser warned Friday that the nation’s unemployment rate could stay “unacceptably high” for years to come — a situation that would seriously complicate Barack Obama’s ability to convince Americans that he’s beating back the recession.

Pawlenty encourages leaving health reform up to states

The story behind Labor Day

For most of us, Labor Day means backyard barbecues, weekend sales, and a last carefree day before school starts. But the laid-back holiday has some seriously sad history, including chaos, riots, and even death. Let us explain.

A tragic tale
Back in the days of the Industrial Revolution, workers were expected to put in 12-hour days, seven days a week (yes, including kids). Already sounds awful, right? It gets worse. In Pullman, Illinois, a company town that employed and housed workers to build posh railway cars, times had gotten tough. In response, George Pullman cut jobs and wages. It was 1893. Thousands of workers walked off their jobs in protest, demanding higher salaries and lower rents. Other unions joined, refusing to work the Pullman cars, turning the small-town fracas into a national fury.

With mail cars backing up, and riots worrying train execs, President Grover Cleveland stepped in. He declared the strike illegal and sent 12,000 troops to break the strike. Cue brutal protests and bloodshed. The strike was broken, but so was the spirit of the workers. To reach out to the labor movement, Congress rushed the national holiday into law. The bad will resulted in Cleveland losing re-election. But the day off for hot dogs endures.

When is it?
Labor Day falls on the first Monday of September. This year, that would be Monday, September 7. According to the Department of Labor, Congress passed an act in 1894 making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday.

So, working stiffs everywhere, say it now, with feeling: Happy Labor Day.

The Suicide Prevention campaign of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is expanding its outreach to all Veterans by piloting an online, one-to-one “chat service” for Veterans who prefer reaching out for assistance using the Internet.

Called “Veterans Chat,” the new service enables Veterans, their families and friends to go online where they can anonymously chat with a trained VA counselor. If a “chatter” is determined to be in a crisis, the counselor can take immediate steps to transfer the person to the VA Suicide Prevention Hotline, where further counseling and referral services are provided and crisis intervention steps can be taken.
